GARNTEG PRIMARY SCHOOL

Gartneg Primary School

THE FACTS

Garnteg Primary School is a state school situated in the small town of Garndiffaith, near Pontypool. The school serves some private, but mostly rented homes and provides for children from Garndiffaith, Varteg and Talywain.

The school describes the area it serves as being mainly socially and economically deprived. Approximately 40% of students are entitled to free school meals and 34% require SEN support. This is significantly higher than the local and national averages and there are 302 full time students on roll.

Base line indications show that attainment on entry to the school is generally below the national average with students requiring input for speech and language. Approximately 22% of students are identified as having additional learning needs (ALN) and two students receive a statement of ALN.

WHY DID GARTNEG IMPLEMENT STEP?

The School was looking for an intervention that supports and impacts on the child as a whole - their behavior, their social skills and general wellbeing, not just their academic performance.

Previous interventions had not had an impact on certain students and they felt STEP could help these individuals. The 7 students selected for the STEP Program were at least two benchmarks below the national average for their age in all subjects and had low self-esteem and poor social skills.

The School liked that the benefits of the STEP Program are sustained and stay with an individual for life.

The STEP Program meets with ESTYN inspection requirements.

THE RESULTS

Garnteg Primary School recorded each student's academic, behavioral and social improvements, alongside attendance figures and general wellbeing during their time on the STEP Program.

After one year on the STEP Program the 7 selected students had attained the following academic improvements in the standardised Welsh Government tests that all students are required to do annually in years 2,3,4,5,6.

Increased to 100% for all 7 students.

These results were achieved due to high compliance to the STEP Program, on average 95%, illustrating that compliance not socio-economic background of the students is a key determiner of success.

WHAT THE SCHOOL SAYS ABOUT STEP

Susan Roche, Headteacher of Garntag Primary School had this to say about the outcomes of the STEP Program:

“In June 2014 I bought the STEP package for 7 students, based on my personal experience of the significant improvements that can be achieved both academically and socially through the Program. After six months we noticed marked improvements in each student's ability in reading and in particular processing and writing development. A number of the students, who were significantly below average are now achieving scores that are accepted as benchmark for their age or above. Improved attendance and  social & behavioral skills have also been noted by all my staff, along with confidence.”
